Abstract

Objectives: This study was aimed to compare the complementary foods education provided by officers in the public health centers (PHCs) and the educational needs of mothers with children.

Methods: The participants were 38 nurses in charge of infants" affairs in 38 PHCs located in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam and 343 mothers with children from 4 to 36 months of age who visited the PHCs for any reasons. Data was collected with the self-administered questionnaire from February 1 to March 30, 2007, and analyzed with descriptive statistics and chi-squared test using SPSS Win (version 12.0).

Results: 65.8 percent of the in PHC nurses had educated the complementary foods. Education on the complementary foods in time, methods, media, and contents by PHC nurses were during pregnancy (52.0%), distributing booklet/pamphlet (72.0%), booklet/pamphlet (80.0%), and time to introduce complementary foods (92.0%), respectively. Preferred education on the complementary foods in time, methods, media, and contents by mothers were postpartum 4-6 months (39.9%), practice (56.3%), booklet/pamphlet (51.0%), and recipe of complementary foods (45.5%), respectively. There were statistically significant difference in time for education, education methods, media, and contents between current education on complementary food provided by PHCs and mothers" needs.

Conclusion: Nurses in charge of child" affairs in PHCs should take a key role in complementary foods education, and develop practice-oriented educational programs based on the mothers" needs related to complementary foods.
